The Polish Ekstraklasa: An Introduction To The Polish Football League

An introduction to The Polish Ekstraklasa

As we all know football is the beautiful game and most of us here have latched onto a club from the Premiership in England or LaLiga from Spain or even perhaps League 1 from France. I’d like to take a moment to talk about a league that some might have never paid attention to. or perhaps never even heard of.

The top flight of football in Poland is called the Ekstraklasa. I see just as much of the passion and culture of what makes football the best game in the world here, as I do in any other league in the world. This is a league of pure passion and honor among the club supporters. This league is certainly not about big money or huge advertisers. This league is about the love of football that the Poles have shared for a lifetime.

Top Clubs in The Polish Ekstraklasa

The league consists of 16 clubs which started play dating back to 1926. A total of 81 teams have reached the top plateau of Polish football, all-time, and a total of 16 teams have claimed the championship. The two clubs with the most championships are Wisla Krakow and Gornik Zabrze, who have both won the league 14 times a piece. The current champion is Legia Warsaw and have represented the Ekstraklasa recently in the UEFA Champions League.

Interesting facts about the league include some of the unique stadiums. Lechia Gdansk play in the national Polish team stadium. and the ground holds 43,615. Within the same league, Miedz Legnica's stadium holds only 6244. Wisla Krakow and Cracovia Football Club's grounds are basically separated by a single small grassy park area and have one of the fiercest rivals in all of Europe. I encourage you all to check out the Ekstraklasa.
